TORONTO TOP 5
Toronto is an exciting city to live, work and study in: it is the prototype of the modern Canadian city. Toronto is home to many renowned post-secondary educational institutions, technical schools, art schools and language schools.
It is an important business centre, the financial capital of Canada and the capital of Ontario, located between the South and the Ontario Lake. As a business capital, it offers the greatest employment opportunities in Canada, and its economy is fast-growing and always dynamic.
Toronto enjoys a privileged location that makes it easy to visit the surrounding areas. These include Niagara Falls, the Blue Mountains, Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, Lakes Simcoe and Erie and many others.
The city also offers 50 kilometres of waterfront with beaches, parks, marinas and waterfront trails, making it easy to enjoy the lake and the outdoors in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Living in Toronto, the largest city in Canada and the 5th largest in all of North America, is an unforgettable experience.
In keeping with Canadian tradition, the main activities in the city are sports and hiking in the great outdoors. In the city, be sure to visit the Air Canada centre, the Rogers Centre and BMO Field – home to football, baseball, American football, basketball and, of course, hockey, Canada’s national sport.
If you’re not a sports fan, have no fear. Toronto is rich in culture and art, with fantastic restaurants, pubs, theaters, concerts, museums, galleries, markets, shops and much more. It is also home to the CN Tower, the tallest single structure in the Northern Hemisphere, which attracts more than 2 million visitors a year. Toronto hosts many international events and festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival, the largest in the world!
The city’s metropolitan area has 6 million inhabitants, making it cosmopolitan and international, a dynamic melting pot that many visitors who come for tourism, work, or study find extremely stimulating. One in every two people is born outside Canada. What better place for a foreigner to feel at home?
cost of living in Toronto
Living in Toronto, particularly anywhere near downtown, can be expensive. Rents are among the highest in Canada, and other standard monthly expenses such as phone plans, groceries, and transit are not cheap either. Fortunately, wages in Toronto are also pretty good and the provincial government passed legislation that increased the minimum wage in Ontario from $11.60 an hour to $14 an hour in January 2017.
A monthly TTC pass costs $146.25 and gives you unlimited travel for one calendar month. You can purchase them from the collector’s booth at any station. A single fare costs $3.25, so you’ll need to make 45 trips a month or 12 a week for it to be affordable. For most people who work five days a week feel it’s worth it.
